The rifle and shotgun ranges at Camp Sequassen provide an excellent setting for safe and enjoyable range and target activities. The rifle range is designed for .22 caliber target shooting, offering a great way to practice accuracy and precision. The shotgun range features clay targets, giving participants the opportunity to develop timing and focus in a challenging outdoor setting. Both ranges meet Scouting America safety standards and are available for unit activities, merit badge work, or recreational use, making them a popular rental option at Camp Sequassen.
To begin, units must contact the Camp Registrar at the Connecticut Yankee Council office. Reservations must be made in advance, as no range may be opened without a valid reservation on file. A Range Reservation Form is required and must be submitted to the Council Resource Center. This form ensures the council knows when the ranges will be used, by which unit, and under what leadership. Importantly, this form is separate from a campsite or facility reservation form—if a unit is also staying overnight, the unit must complete that additional paperwork.
Every reservation must include two key positions:
A Range Instructor with a current NRA certification or Scouting America National Camp School certification in rifle or shotgun, depending on the program. This individual must also complete the Camp Sequassen Range Instructor Orientation. Their certification must be on file with the Council Resource Center.
A Range Safety Officer (RSO) with current NRA RSO certification, also on file. This person is responsible for enforcing safety protocols.
The Instructor and RSO must be two different people. If both the rifle and shotgun ranges are being used at the same time, separate certified instructors and RSOs are required.
Also, all Scouts BSA troops, Venturing crews, and Sea Scout ships who provide unit-level sponsored/planned range and target activities must have at least one registered unit leader 21+ years of age take the Range Activity SAFEty online training available on MyScouting. This individual must be present at the range during the range and target activities. Participating in this training will help ensure a unit understands Scouting America’s range and target activities policies.
The ranges are available for unit programs from September through May only. They cannot be reserved during summer camp, when the entire camp is reserved for seasonal programming, or when camp is closed. Shooting may only take place on Saturdays between 9:00 AM – 12:00 noon and 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM. No shooting is permitted on Sundays. This scheduling ensures safety, proper staffing, and compliance with council standards.
The council charges a rental fee to cover maintenance, equipment, and facility use:
In-Council Scouting Rate:
$125 (rifle or shotgun range)
Out-of-Council Scouting Rate:
$160 (rifle or shotgun range)
These fees include the use of camp-owned firearms appropriate to the activity. However, all firearms must be checked out through the Ranger or Campmaster, and privately owned guns are not permitted.
Camp Sequassen provides all firearms for use on Camp ranges. The use of personal firearms and personal ammunition is prohibited in all Scouting programs at a camp property.
Units are responsible for purchasing their own ammunition and consumables:
Rifle: .22 caliber long or long rifle ammunition (standard velocity is preferred), and paper targets
Shotgun: 12-gauge target loads (7½, 8, or 9 shot) and White Flyer biodegradable clay targets
