Camp Sequassen

Camp Sequassen’s Lifeguard Certification Program is a comprehensive and hands-on training opportunity designed for Scouts and Venturers aged 15 and older who are interested in becoming certified American Red Cross lifeguards. The program not only prepares participants to work as lifeguards at pools and waterfronts, but also instills a strong sense of leadership, responsibility, and emergency readiness.

Running for the full duration of a camp week (Monday through Friday), the course combines classroom instruction, physical training, and real-time scenarios in both pool and open water settings. Upon successful completion, participants receive certifications in Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR/AED.

Eligibility

To participate in Camp Sequassen’s Lifeguard Certification Program, Scouts and Venturers must be at least 15 years old by the start of the program week. This age requirement aligns with American Red Cross national standards. All participants must also pass a prerequisite swim test, which includes swimming 550 yards continuously using both front crawl and breaststroke, retrieving a 10-pound object from a depth of 9 feet, and treading water for 2 minutes using only their legs. These tests ensure that participants have the strength, stamina, and comfort in the water required to safely perform rescue techniques. While the program is open to anyone who meets the age and skill requirements, it is best suited for those who are confident swimmers and ready to take on a physically demanding and mentally focused week of training.

Curriculum

The Lifeguard Certification Program at Sequassen is based on the American Red Cross Lifeguarding curriculum and includes training in three key areas: lifeguarding skills, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. Instruction is led by certified Red Cross trainers and experienced aquatic staff, blending classroom lessons with hands-on rescue practice at the camp’s pool and waterfront.

Key skills taught include recognizing distressed swimmers, performing in-water rescues, responding to unconscious victims, and managing spinal injuries. CPR and AED use are also a critical component, taught in scenarios that simulate real emergencies. Students are evaluated through written tests and skill demonstrations to ensure they meet certification standards. Upon successful completion, participants earn nationally recognized credentials valid for two years.

Commitment

This is not your typical camp activity—it’s a full-week, all-day course that demands focus, stamina, and dedication. Scouts enrolled in the Lifeguard Certification Program will not have time to attend other merit badge classes during the week, as the schedule includes morning, afternoon, and sometimes evening sessions. Attendance at every class is mandatory, and successful completion depends on consistent participation, demonstrated skill proficiency, and passing the final exams.

The $150 program fee covers certification materials, rescue equipment use, and instruction costs—a great value compared to community programs, which can often cost more. For those serious about earning a real-world certification and taking on a leadership role in aquatic safety, this program is a significant and worthwhile time investment.

Why Enroll?

Earning a lifeguard certification is more than a summer accomplishment—it’s a professional credential and a life-saving skill. Many Scouts who complete the course use their certification to work as part of Camp Sequassen’s own summer staff.

Beyond the job potential, the program fosters maturity, quick decision-making, teamwork, and the confidence to respond in high-pressure situations. For Scouts seeking a challenge, this course offers one of the most demanding and rewarding experiences at camp. Whether you want to support your community, prepare for summer employment, or simply be ready to save a life, the Lifeguard Certification Program at Camp Sequassen is a powerful step forward.
