Camp Sequassen

Welcome to the Handicrafts Area

The Handicrafts Area at Camp Sequassen is a vibrant and inviting part of the camp that lets Scouts take a break from rugged outdoor adventure and dive into creative, hands-on craftsmanship. Located under open shelter and surrounded by forest, this space becomes a hub for artistic expression, skill-building, and personal accomplishment.

Crafting Skills

The Handicrafts Area at Camp Sequassen is where craftsmanship comes alive. Scouts can dive deep into hands-on skills through Metalwork, Leatherwork, and Wood Carving—three of the most rewarding and enduring crafts in the program.

In Metalwork, Scouts shape, form, and decorate metal using tools and techniques that introduce them to the artistry of forging. Leatherwork teaches Scouts how to cut, stamp, and dye leather to create personalized items like belts and pouches. In Wood Carving, Scouts master knife safety while carving neckerchief slides, figures, or emblems from blocks of wood.

These crafts demand focus, creativity, and care—and the results are both functional and lasting. The staff provide individualized instruction, ensuring each Scout develops the confidence and technique needed to take pride in their projects. More than just merit badges, these skills connect Scouts to a long tradition of craftsmanship and self-expression.

Daily aCtivities

Beyond traditional merit badge work, the Handicrafts Area comes alive during daily open sessions with unique activities and lively camp traditions.

One of the biggest highlights is the Tri-Craft-alon, where Scouts compete in a three-part challenge testing their precision and creativity in metalwork, leatherwork, and woodcarving. It’s a fast-paced, skill-focused event where Scouts race to complete mini-projects with quality and flair. Another crowd favorite is The Voice, a fun and spirited twist on the popular talent show. Scouts perform songs with staff acting as judges who “turn their chairs” for the best combinations of creativity and entertainment.

These daily programs provide a welcoming space for Scouts to unwind, socialize, and laugh while still engaging their hands and minds. Whether it’s serious carving or light-hearted fun, the Handicrafts Area is always full of energy, music, and memorable moments.

More Than Just Crafts

What makes the Handicrafts Area meaningful is not just what Scouts make—but what they learn in the process. Handicrafts help develop fine motor skills, attention to detail, creative thinking, and persistence. Scouts are taught to follow instructions carefully, measure twice before cutting, and see a project through to completion. It’s a perfect balance to the high-adventure and outdoor programs at camp, giving Scouts the chance to create, focus, and proudly say, “I made this!”

It’s also a place where Scouts who might be shy, introverted, or less interested in high-adventure activities can find their place and shine. And for everyone, it’s a satisfying feeling to leave with something they made with their own hands.

A Keepsake From Camp

The crafts that Scouts create at Camp Sequassen often become treasured souvenirs—symbols of skill and patience. Whether it’s a stamped leather bracelet or a handwoven basket, these projects travel home as reminders of a fun and fulfilling week at camp.

At Camp Sequassen, the Handicrafts Area is more than a place to make things—it’s a place to make memories.
