Camp Sequassen

Welcome to the Scoutcraft Area

The Scoutcraft Area is the heart of Scouting tradition at Camp Sequassen. It’s where Scouts learn the practical outdoor skills that form the foundation of the Scouts BSA program—skills that foster independence, resourcefulness, and teamwork. Whether a Scout is brand new to camp or working toward Eagle, the Scoutcraft Area offers something for everyone.

Core Scout Skills

At the Scoutcraft Area, Scouts build essential survival and outdoor living skills. This includes fire building, knot tying, lashings, map and compass navigation, and first aid basics. Through hands-on instruction and real-world practice, Scouts learn how to set up shelters, cook over open flames, and safely use axes, saws, and knives. These aren’t just camp activities—they’re life skills, taught in an environment that encourages responsibility, safety, and confidence.

The area is designed with practical learning stations and shaded instruction areas where Scouts can work directly with materials and tools. Many of the skills taught here fulfill advancement requirements for Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class ranks, making Scoutcraft a key stop for any Scout progressing through the program.

Merit Badges

The Scoutcraft Area offers a variety of classic merit badges that are central to the outdoor Scouting experience. Camping is a foundational badge, guiding Scouts through essential topics like gear selection, setting up safe and efficient campsites, outdoor cooking, and following Leave No Trace principles. Wilderness Survival gives Scouts the skills and confidence to handle emergencies, teaching how to build shelters from natural materials, signal for help, and respond when plans go awry. These badges reinforce critical outdoor knowledge while encouraging self-reliance and preparedness.

Scouts can also challenge themselves with more advanced or specialized badges like Pioneering, where lashings and ropework are used to construct large, functional camp structures. Orienteering teaches navigation using a map and compass, with Scouts applying their skills in timed courses across camp. Additional badges, such as First Aid, Emergency Preparedness, and Geocaching, may also be offered depending on the week. All badges are taught by experienced instructors who break down complex skills into manageable steps, ensuring every Scout has the opportunity to succeed.

Activities for All

The Scoutcraft Area comes alive during open program time, offering interactive and skill-based challenges that turn learning into action. One of the most popular events is the Firebuilding Challenge, where Scouts race to build and light a fire hot enough to burn through a string suspended above their kindling. It’s a test of patience, technique, and readiness that draws both participants and spectators.

And it’s not just the youth who get in on the action—adult leaders have their own activities too, especially in the popular Scoutmaster Cook-Offs. This event pits adult leaders against one another in friendly culinary competitions, where they use open fires and their own ingredients to whip up meals judged by Scouts and staff. It’s a great way for leaders to model Scouting skills, share laughs, and stay active in the camp experience. These events foster a sense of community across troops, making Scoutcraft a gathering place for everyone—Scouts and adults alike—who want to test their skills, share traditions, and enjoy the fun side of Scouting’s core values.

Where Tradition Meets Adventure

Scoutcraft at Camp Sequassen isn’t just about rope and fire—it’s about developing the skills and mindset of a capable, confident outdoorsman. It’s where younger Scouts earn their first rank requirements and older Scouts mentor their peers. It’s a place of campfire stories, problem-solving, and pride in self-reliance. At Camp Sequassen, the Scoutcraft Area reminds every camper that adventure doesn’t start with gear—it starts with knowledge, skill, and the drive to be prepared
